Here in Oklahoma City we have been having all kinds of weather lately including ice storm, snow storm, rain storm, and dense fog.
The TV and newspaper here insist on blaming the bad weather conditions for traffic collisions that happen during them. But, I have a big problem with blaming weather conditions for traffic collisions….
When I was in 10th grade in California, I took a required class called “Driver’s Education”, or “Driver’s Ed” for short. The most important thing I took out of Driver’s Ed was this:
22350. No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.
Amended Ch. 252, Stats. 1963. Effective September 20, 1963.
That is a California law, and I live in Oklahoma now. But, the “Basic Speed Law” should not have to be a law. This is, or should be, common sense…
Christmas Eve, for instance, we had a blizzard. Some people insisted on going Christmas shopping during a blizzard, driving blind, not being able to see where they were going, and slipping and sliding all over the place. Then, the TV and newspaper reporters blamed the wrecks on the weather.
The prudent speed for some weather conditions is really, really slow. The prudent speed for other conditions is stopped, with you home and your car in the garage, in my humble opinion.
The TV and newspaper news reporters are being irresponsible blaming the weather when they report traffic collisions. They should be telling the truth and report that traffic collisions are caused by driving recklessly for the weather conditions.
I just had to have a rant….
